The newly installed Bishop of Derry, Most Rev Dr Donal McKeown, today celebrated the first Mass of the Chrism in St Eugene’s Cathedral in three years.

Priests from all over the diocese will attend the Mass during which the Holy Oils – the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and the oil of Chrism) which will be used in Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick and Ordination – were blessed.

During the Mass, Bishop McKeown and the priests also renewed their priestly vows to serve Christ and his Church.

The was no Chrism Mass in the diocese as there was no bishop appointed following the retirement of Bishop Seamus Hegarty in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Concelebrated Mass of the Lord’s Supper will take place in the Cathedral at 7.30pm tonight followed by the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose until 11.00pm.
