The newly installed Bishop of Derry, Most Rev Dr Donal McKeown, will celebrate the Mass of Chrism in St Eugene’s Cathedral at 10.00am tomorrow (Holy Thursday) – the first time the ceremony will take place in three years.

Priests from all over the diocese will attend the Mass during which the Holy Oils – the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and the oil of Chrism) which will be used in Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick and Ordination – will be blessed.

During the Mass, Bishop McKeown and the priests will renew their priestly vows to serve Christ and his Church.

The Mass was not able to be celebrated as there was no bishop in the diocese following the retirement of Bishop Seamus Hegarty in 2011.

The Concelebrated Mass of the Lord’s Supper will take place in the Cathedral at 7.30pm tomorrow night followed by the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose until 11.00pm.
