Monaghan’s Matt Carthy, Sinn Féin’s European candidate for the Midlands-North West Constituency, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s annual Drumboe Martyrs Commemoration on Easter Sunday.

Meanwhile, prominent Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey will be the main speaker at the main Co Tyrone commemoration in Carrickmore.

There will be over 40 localised graveside commemorations and wreath-laying ceremonies throughout the Tyrone over the Easter weekend including at 11.00am Aghyaran and Cranagh graveyards and at 1.00pm at the republican plot in Strabane cemetery.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Cumann na mBan and the key roles women played in the 1916 Rising, the Black and Tan War and at the forefront of the struggle for Irish Freedom and equality in the following decades will form a centre theme of commemorations throughout Ireland and further afield over the Easter period.

Cllr Jay McCauley, chairperson of the Strabane National Graves Association, Jay McCauley, called on republicans from throughout the district to attend their local and main commemorations.

He said: “Easter is a time for remembering friends and comrades who have given their lives in pursuit of ideals and goals of Irish Republicanism.

“It is time for reflection and renewal when we as Irish Republicans rededicate ourselves to the legitimate and achievable goals of independence, unity and equality.”
