Arrangements to facilitate users of the “Sparta Hut” during the redevelopment of Brooke Park has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Cllr Barney O’Hagan.

The building is due to be replaced within the overall Brooke Park Redevelopment Plan which is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Derry City Council and Department of Social Development.

All of the current “Sparta Hut” user groups are to be accommodated in the new building.

It is anticipated  building work will commence this autumn with the new building opening around April 2016.

Councillor O’Hagan said: “Following recent Health and Safety assessments of the Sparta Hut, it was recommended for closure and immediate measures to manage the Health and Safety risks were put in place.

‘The planned closure of the Sparta Hut will be phased around relocating the existing users within or adjacent to Brooke Park guaranteeing there will be no loss of access or service for the user groups.

‘The boxing club will be re-housed in a portacabin which will be sited in the car park at Brooke Park Leisure Centre.

“The matted area will close early in April and the weights area before the end of April. The temporary accommodation for the boxing club should be in place by late April/early May.”

He concluded: “All three closures will be on completion of the relocation arrangements. All the user groups were fully consulted ensuring individual circumstances of each group were catered for.”
