The suspicious object found under a car in the driveway of a house in one of Derry’s most affluent streets was a “crude but viable device,” police have said.

Talbot Park, off the Culmore Road,  was sealed off and a number of residents moved out of their homes for several hours.

The alert began at around 1.30pm after a woman noticed the object under a car parked in the driveway of her home.

It is understood she picked up it up before realising it was suspicious.

She then telephoned her husband who subsequently alerted police.

British army technical officers (bomb squad) carried out a controlled explosion and have taken away the device for further examination.

Talbot Park has been reopened and residents allowed to return to their homes.

Police have asked anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the Talbot Park area recently to contact them at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101.

A PSNI spokesperson said information could also be passed anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
