City of Derry’s Declan Reed.

Top club athletes are expected to line out along with the best local recreational runners for the annual Bay Road 5k being run in Derry tonight.

Last year’s top two, City of Derry Spartan Declan Reed and Foyle Valley Athletic Club’s Scott Rankin – the latter placed third in Sunday’s Titanic 10K in Belfast – are expected to line up as is Connor Bradley – fourth in Sunday’s Great Ireland Mile in Dublin.

Entries will be taken at race headquarters in the University of Ulster’s Magee Sports Centre on Rock Road from 6.00pm with the race start set for 7.30pm on the Riverside Walkway, close to KFC.

Pre-entry can still be made up to 3.00 this afternoon by emailing, name, gender, age on race day and club if any, to [email protected]

All race packs and payment of the £8/E10 entry fee can be sorted at race HQ from 6.00pm to 7.15pm this evening.

Race organisers have stressed 5K runners must be at least 13 years of age on race day, to comply with governing body permit regulations.

The main event will be complemented by a 1K run for children who may be interested in qualifying for the Mini Marathon at the upcoming Walled City Marathon.

Tonight’s 1K will be the second qualifying run for the marathon and entries, which are free, will be taken from 6.00pm in Da Vinci’s car park for the run which has a 7.30pm start.

The 1K runners will take in the last Kilometre of the 5K, which is entirely on the Bay Road circuit and traffic free.

Intending participants should endeavour to get entered early as the start point is about three minutes away from Da Vinci’s and the 1K must start on time to avoid a clash with the 5K runners who will be on the circuit by 7.35pm.
