PEOPLE “FED UP” WITH SECURITY ALERT DISRUPTIONS – LEONARD

bombThe people of Strabane have become “fed up” with the disruption caused by security alerts in the town, according to a local election candidate.

SDLP Sperrin candidate Patrick Leonard was speaking after last night’s alert – the third such incident in a week in the town.

A number of homes were evacuated after police attended a report of a suspicious object found at a green area at the Ballycolman Estate.

A PSNI spokesperson said the object was declared “nothing untoward” after British army technical officers (bomb squad) carried out a controlled explosion.

Those responsible have been condemned by Mr Leonard who said the latest alert had caused “severe inconvenience” and served no purpose whatsoever.

He added: “The only people who are suffering from these incidients are local people within their own community.

“In particular to older people and the most vulnerable who once again have been forced to leave their homes.”

He concluded: “People are fed up with these kind of disruptions to their daily lives and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police.”
