Ryan McBride: stretchered off.

Dundalk 3 Derry Ciy 0

Derry City suffered their second defeat of the season when beaten 3-0 by and impressive Dundalk in their SSE Premier Division clash at Oriel Park tonight.

It was a victory the home side fully deserved as they had most of the play and created the better chances.

Indeed, the visitors’ first shot on target came 10 minutes from time.

The game was delayed for 12 minutes in the first half following a head injury sustained by Ryan McBride, the defender being stretchered off and taken to hospital after colliding with Hoban in the 28th minute.

However, it was reported from the dressing room that he was conscious and talking to club officials and the hospital visit was purely a precaution.

Stephen Kenny’s side had the better of the game in the first 45 but despite having a number of attempts on goal never ever troubled visiting keeper Gerard Doherty, mainly due to excellent performances by defenders Cliff Byrne and Aaron Barry.

Indeed, Derry’s first attempt on goal came in the 27th minute when  a Curran free kick never troubled home keeper Cherrie.

Shortly after Jarvis replaced the injured McBride, Derry went close when a Molloy shot skimmed past a post.

At the other end, Doherty got down well to hold on to a Boyle header before Gartland sent a header wide of the upright.

Dundalk thought they had taken the lead in the 54th minute but had the score ruled out for offside.

However, they did go in front nine minutes later when defender Brian Gartland headed his second goal of the season from a corner.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Towell finished with aplomb after being set up by Byrne.

Enda Curran got Derry’s first effort on target in the 80th minute when Cherrie did well to deal with his looping header.

Substitute McMillan wrapped up a fully deserved victory with a third goal for the home side in the 89th minute.
