The planting of a bomb on Strabane golf course has been condemned as a “wilful act of terror” by Patrick Leonard, SDLP candidate in next month’s local government election.

Army experts made safe the device which local police commander, Chief Inspector Andy Lemon, said had been intended to kill or seriously injure police.

The operation followed information received by police last night that a device had been left in the Ballycolman Road area.

The device comprised nuts and bolts packed with explosives into a pipe.

Mr Leonard described the incident as a  “reckless act” that put lives at great risk close to a residential area and caused serious disruption for people living in the area.

He added: “This device had the ability to maim and kill and was to place this in an areas where school children walk by cannot be tolerated.

“Thankfully, no one was injured in this wilful act of terror.”

Mr Leonard concluded: “I would appeal to anyone who has any information in relation to this or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area of the golf links on Sunday night to contact the PSNI immediately.”
