SUCCESSFUL FIRST EVER DERRY SCHOOLS AQUATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mayor Martin Reilly gets ready to start the first wave of swimmers in the Derry City Council Sports Development Swim Aquathon held at Templemore Sports Complex.

There was a large turnout for the first ever Derry Schools Aquathon Championships at Templemore Sports Complex.

Hosted by the Derry City Council’s Sports and Leisure Department the event was staged with the support of Triathlon Ireland and North West Triathlon Club and saw competitors from local primary and post primary schools taking to the pool and track.

A pool swim by pupils aged between eight and 15 years was followed by a run within the Complex grounds.

This event followed a year of successful triathlon events within the city including the Firmus Triathlon and the 2013 Kids TRYathlon.

Derry Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly congratulated all involved in the event, stating he supported any project that encouraged physical exercise, good relations and a healthy lifestyle.

Mayor Reilly, wh”I want to further congratulate Derry City Council Sports and Leisure Team and North West Triathlon Club for their efforts in running events such as this and promoting the sporting legacy in 2013 from a range of events including the Walled City Marathon in both engaging additional user groups and building on these sporting events year on year.”
