taxi signFears have been expressed that someone will be killed as a result of children, some as young as eight years old, stoning vehicles in Derry.

Sinn Fein Cllr Barney O’Hagan has expressed concern that unless it stopped it was only a matter of time until someone was killed or seriously injured.

According to Cllr O’Hagan those involved were aged from eight to 13 years old.

He said: “Throwing stones at vehicles could end up with someone losing their life or very seriously injured.”

Cllr O’Hagan was speaking after meeting taxi drivers in the city who reported being attacked by young stone throwers on a number occasions.

eTom King, of the IWU (Independent Workers’ Union), which represents a number of the city’s taxi drivers, echoed Cllr O’Hagan’s concerns and revealed taxi drivers were considering not going into certain areas.

Mr King called on parents to be aware of what there children “were getting up to.”
