An online video showing Derry police officers lifting an incapacitated woman from the middle of the road and laying her in a bus stop at the side of the road before driving off and leaving her has been referred to the Police Ombudsman by the PSNI.

There has been an angry reaction to the video which has been posted on social media.

Derry police commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Cargin said the matter had been referred to the Police Ombudsman and police would be cooperating with the investigation to bring it to a conclusion as quickly as possible.

Sinn Fein in Derry are to meet police chiefs in the city today to discuss the incident, recorded by Sean McCallion, which occurred in John Street.

SF Cllr Elisha McCallion, a member of the Derry Police and Community Safety Partnership, described the officers’ behaviour as “unacceptable.”

She said: “I have viewed the video and it’s shocking and totally unacceptable.”

She concluded: “I have also been contacted by members of the public angered by this.”
