Seachtain na Gaeilge is the perfect opportunity to explore the opportunities the language presents, Sinn Féin Irish language spokesperson Councillor Kevin Campbell has said.

Cllr Campbell has urged everyone to attend the event which will run until Monday next, 17 March .

He said people should use it to explore what the language could offer them as there was “so much on offer.”

Th programme includes  drama, music, book clubs, after school events, concerts, debates and poetry hosted through the medium of Irish

Cllr Campbell said: “Whether it is signing up to Líofa with a view to becoming fluent, or just learning a ‘cúpla focal’ which is a couple of words to use with friends the language is so rewarding.

“The Irish language is very prominent in many of our place names and gives a great understanding as to the origins of those names so even a basic understanding can develop into a worthwhile and interesting hobby.
“Events during Seachtain na Gaeilge are  happening right across the North and I would encourage people to search out one that suits them and give the language a try.”

He concluded: “More and more people are now learning the language so this is an opportunity for everyone to make an effort and use whatever Irish they have whether they have a cúpla focal or are Líofa in bringing the language to life.”
