SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has paid tribute to Professor Martin McGinnity, Director of the Intelligent Systems Research Centre, who will be leaving the Magee campus of the University of Ulster later this month to take up a new post in Nottingham.

Mr Durkan said: “I would like to pay tribute to the leadership Professor Martin McGinnity has shown in establishing such a pioneering centre of excellence here in Derry.

“Martin has always welcomed various visitors to the city who have been amazed and impressed by the nature and level of the work pursued at the centre.

“All visitors have been impressed by the ‘robots’ and the applied innovation which can lead to health and social outcomes as well as business development.”

Mr Durkan concluded: “The cutting-edge work that has been carried out under the directorship of Martin McGinnity really is shaping the future, and represents an exciting example of the type of knowledge-driven employment which we hope to develop even further here in the North West.”
