With thousands expected in Derry this weekend for the St Patrick’s Festival celebrations, police in the city are reminding drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads.
Superintendent Garry Eaton, Operations Manager for G District, said police would be enforcing the law to make our roads safer.
He said: “Many people will be making the most of the long weekend and better weather to visit friends and family or take a short break, so expect to see more traffic on the roads, particularly caravans and motorcyclists.
“Speeding and drink-driving remain the biggest causes of collisions which kill and seriously injure people on roads across Northern Ireland, therefore it is imperative that all road users take personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others.
“If you speed, take drink or drugs and drive, fail to wear your seatbelt, drive carelessly or dangerously, you run the real risk of killing or seriously injuring yourself, your passengers or some other innocent road user.
“Please be particularly mindful of motorcyclists who will be making the most of the brighter weather, and have consideration for caravan users travelling at a slower pace. Everyone must take into account increased traffic levels over the holiday period and heed the road safety message; wear your seatbelt, reduce your speed and never drink or take drugs before driving.”
Supt Eaton concluded: “Police will continue to enforce the law to make Northern Ireland’s roads safer, but our role is very much secondary. All road users can help prevent deaths and injuries on our roads.”
