The house in Kerrigan Close where last night’s shooting took place.

A two year old child escaped injury when a man was shot in both legs in the Brandywell area of Derry last night.

The victim, originally from the Creggan area, is being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital after two masked men forced their way into a house in Kerrigan Close adjacent to Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto at around 10.00pm.

His injuries are believed not to be life-threatening.

The man’s girlfriend and two-year-old child, who were in the house at the time, escaped uninjured.

Speaking to Derry Daily this morning a neighbour, who did not want to be named, told how the man’s girlfriend run into the street shouting for help immediately after the shooting.

She said: “After the shooting she was shouting at the gunmen to get out. She then came running out screaming for help shouting she was alone in the house on her own with her baby.”

The shooting has been condemned by local Sinn Féin councillor Patricia Logue  who lives close to the scene.

She said there was “no justification for this type of action.”

She added: “Whatever organisation carried this out, needs to come forward and give a clear explanation for their actions.”

Cllr Logue concluded: “We are in a new era, we are creating a new society for the younger generation and there can be no place for this type of activity.”
