MAN IN COURT CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH 50 MILE CAR CHASE

A 20-year-old Derry man has appeared in court charged in connection with yesterday’s 50 mile car chase across County Donegal.

Martin Stokes, of Cornshell Fields, Steelstown, faced a total of 25 dangerous driving charges allegedly detected by Gardai who pursued a Nissan Primera from Ardara to Letterkenny.

Garda Elaine Kavanagh, from Glenties Garda Station, told the court Stokes, who also has in address in Sligo, was also facing 11 other charges in connection with the alleged incident including failing to stop for members of An Garda Siochana and hit-and-run allegations.

Judge Kevin Kilrane set bail at €1,000 with an independent surety of €1,000.

However, Stokes was remanded in custody to Castlrea prison because of 36 outstanding arrest warrants against him.

He is due to appear again at Letterkenny District Court on Monday next.
