Mums-to-be can enjoy local aquanatal classes as part of a range of Western Health Trust activities promoting fitness during pregnancy.expectantmums

The Trust provides aquanatal classes in eisure facilities across in Derry, Limavady and Strabane to help women prepare both physically and psychologically for the demands of labour and for the life as the parent of a new baby.

Taking part in aquanatal or other antenatal classes not only helps to build endurance for preparation during labour and delivery, it also promotes body awareness and is a great social event to meet other expectant mums.

Cathy McLaughlin, Western Trust Parent Craft Midwife, said: “Aquanatal is like aqua aerobics especially designed for pregnant mothers.

“Participation in aquanatal is not only enjoyable but also a great advantage to women both during and after their pregnancy.

“A typical aquanatal class might consist of specially designed aerobic workouts in the water; or doing exercises standing in the pool. The water will help support your weight, while gentle stretching exercises make you feel good and can help keep you fit and supple for birth.”

Aquanatal classes are delivered by Western Trust midwives, who will instruct and take part in the class as well.

This gentle form of exercise assists good breathing techniques and with the relaxing pool environment aquanatal leaves you feeling refreshed and revitalised.

In addition to Aquanatal, other forms of physical activities are also available for ladies who don’t particularly like water. These include; Antenatal classes, Yogacise, Hypnobirthing and Reflexology.
