At least 20 young people have been taken to hospital after falling ill at an event at the Odyssey Arena being attended by hundreds of Derry teenagers.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service declared a “major incident” earlier this evening when 60 teenagers became ill while attending a gig by renowned Dutch DJ Hardwell.

It is understood they are being treated for the effects of drugs and alcohol.

The gig is still going on and anxious parents are unable to contact their children to due to no mobile phone signals being available at the East Belfast venue.

One told Derry Daily: “We have rung round other parents and they, like ourselves, cannot make contact. I have been to the Odyssey myself on a few occasions and have never been able to  get a signal. We are playing a waiting game at the minute.”

Scores of police officers, who were on duty in North Belfast at the Twaddell Avenue loyalist protest, have been diverted to the venue where bars have been shut.

The Ulster Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital have put extra staff on standby to help cope with the situation.

Former Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of Belfast Niall O’Donnghaile the number of people involved was small in comparison the size of the crowd at the event.
