FREE PLACES UP FOR GRABS AT DONEGAL GAELTACHT COLLEGES

One hundred free places are up for grabs at colleges in Irish-speaking areas in Donegal, thanks to the North’s Cultural Department.gaeltacht-1

Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín is encouraing applications for the 2014 Líofa Bursary scheme which is sponsoring 100 places at colleges in the Donegal Gaeltacht.

Ms. Ní Chuilín said the scheme offered practical financial assistance to people who hadsigned up to the Líofa challenge and pledged to reach fluency in Irish by next year.

She added: “I am sure all those able to attend will find it a rewarding experience and a great way to meet new people.

“With a mixture of formal classes and activities students can improve their fluency in the Irish language and deepen their awareness of their heritage.

“I believe that the rich cultural heritage on this island is something we all share and something we can all embrace and enjoy.”

“The Irish language should be open to everyone, irrespective of their tradition, background or financial circumstances,” he concluded.

The Gaeltacht Bursary Scheme is open to participants who meet the following criteria:

:: Signed up to the Líofa 2015 challenge;

:: Are not in receipt of any other scholarship;

:: Reside in Armagh, Fermanagh, Antrim, Derry, Down, or Tyrone.

Eligible applicants who meet one of the following criteria at the time of application will receive a full bursary (ie course fee and Accommodation):

:: Applicant or the applicant’s child(ren) are in receipt of free school meals as approved by the local Education and Library Board (applicants will be required to provide a copy of the Board’s award letter);

:: or are in receipt of one of the following:.

Pension Credit;

Income Support;

Income based Job Seekers Allowance;

Income related Employment and Support Allowance;

Guarantee element of State Pension Credit;

Support under the Immigration and Asylum Act 3;

or

Young people who receive Income Support, income based Job Seeker’s Allowance or income related Employment and Support Allowance, in their own right, are also eligible.
