Derry man James McClean scored his first goal for Wigan Athletic to send the FA Cup holders safely through to the next round.

Wigan Athletic’s James McClean.

His 78th minute left foot drive came after Wigan had gone behind in their fourth round clash with Premiership side Crystal Palace at the WD Stadium.

It was the first time the two clubs had ever met in the FA Cup.

Wigan had gone ahead through Ben Watson in the 36th minute but were pegged back by Aaron Wilbraham in the 69th.

However, McClean struck with 12 minutes remaining to send the Athletic fans home happy to await tomorrow’s fifth round draw and keep their dreams of a return to Wembley very much alive.

The former Derry City favourite’s first goal for The Latics game came in his 17th appearance for the club who he joined from Sunderland during last summer’s “transfer window.”
