Boyd Rankin will be “last man in” for England in their first innings against Australia in the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney.

Boyd Rankin limps off in Sydney.

And the Bready man may not have long to wait to “pull on the pads” as the visitors have made a disastrous start to the second day’s play at the RCG.

Trailing the hosts by 318 at the start of play on 8-1, the visitors have added just six runs for the loss of two wickets.

England are now on 14-3 after 10 overs.

Rankin’s debut for England has been frustrating.

He limped out of yesterday’s play having only bowled 8.2 overs with a suspected hamstring injury which, after a scan, proved to be cramp.

Rankin was brought into the England attack after four humiliating defeats which has saw the Aussies regain the Ashes.
