Sport in the North West has been given another boost with news that the  next phase of the new Finn Harps stadium is expected to begin early in the New Year.

The new stadium – situated close to the Finn Valley Leisure Complex and just the River Finn from the club’s current home Finn Park – will incorporate stands, an administration building, modern dressing rooms and all facilities required by UEFA Licensing.

A junior football pitch is also being provided at the new ground in Ballybofey.

The project has suffered several setbacks over the years as a result of various legal factors and the economic downturn but has seen significant development over the last few months which is expected to continue in 2014.

The news will come as a great boost to Harps fans who have no doubt been frustrated over the continued stalled process of the development over the years.

Club secretary John Campbell told the official Finn Harps website, “We have done a lot of work on the ground in the last three months or so.

“The ground has been fenced off and all the filling has been done and we are now ready to see significant progress in the first three to four months of next year.

“We’ve had discussions with the builder in recent weeks and I expect to see work begin on the next phase, which is the stand and clubrooms, early in 2014.”

The news is seen as another boost for sport in the North West following the announcement that Derry City Council is to redevelop its Brandywell Stadium to provide new sands, changing rooms, a synthetic playing pitch and a new greyhound racing track.
