Evacuated: The Travel Lodge Hotel in Waterford.

Male and female athletes from Foyle Valley AC – in Waterford to compete in today’s AAI All Ireland Cross Country Novice Championships – were last evacuated after a fire broke in the hotel they were staying in

No one was injured in the incident at the Travel Lodge Hotel in Waterford, however the athletes lost vital sleep ahead of today’s prestigious event

Foyle Valley’s Keith Shiels, who was among those evacuated, said: “We were told a TV went on fire in one of the rooms. Everyone in the hotel was evacuated and the fire brigade left about 2.30am. We all lost sleep as a result of it. There are a number of kids from other clubs also staying in the hotel who were also put out. I felt very sorry for them.”
