Every avenue must be explored to ensure residents in the Culmore area of Derry get “enhanced” bus services, a local councillor has said.
Cllr Tony Hassan was speaking after Derry City Council deferred until next month’s meeting of Environmental Services Committee a decision whether to approve a new Translink service for area.
Cllr Hassan, Sinn Fein’s transport spokesperson, said Councillor Tony Hassan said: “It’s very important that we get this right to ensure that residents in the greater Culmore area get a bus service that meets their needs. It’s also crucial that some of the vehicles have disabled access.
“The issue has been debated for the last 20 years and the Culmore area has expanded vastly in that time with hundreds of homes being built in new developments there.
“Not everyone has access to a car and we need to be always striving to get people out of the car and using public transport.”
Cllr Hassan concluded: “It is crucial that we return to this issue at January’s meeting of Environmental Services Committee and that there is a speedy resolution to this problem.”
