The exhibition, which runs until 19 December, features fine art, paintings and three dimensional artefacts from both current and former prisoners.

The exhibition is mounted by the Prison Arts Foundation, with assistance from the Playhouse Theatre, and features over 100 pieces which have been created within the last educational year.

The exhibition features work from all three prisons in Northern Ireland.

Opening the exhibition, Justice Minister David Ford said was vital prisoners’ skills were channelled in a positive manner and in a way which helped them reintegrate into the community.

He aded: “This exhibition displays the creative talent that exists amongst prisoners.  Art plays a crucial role for many prisoners, helping them value learning, boosting self esteem, and allowing them to express feelings and anxieties.

“It is vital that we channel prisoners’ skills in a positive manner and in a way which helps them reintegrate into the community.

“I commend the staff and tutors who work with prisoners to help nurture and develop their talents and I congratulate the Prison Arts Foundation and the Playhouse Theatre for having the foresight to stage this exhibition.”

Mr Ford concluded: “This exhibition, with its very interesting and thought provoking exhibits, is an important element of the City of Culture celebrations.  I encourage everyone to visit and I can assure visitors that they will not be disappointed.”
