A Sinn MLA has said she is determined to find out who ordered the “mystery” raising of the Union Flag at Strabane Social Security Office for the first time 1n 14 years.strabanebenefit

Staff at the Urney Road office were angered when the flag was raised for the first since since 1999 on Remembrance weekend last month.

Sinn Fein West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle said she was determined to find out who gave the go-ahead for the flag to be raised following denials by both DSD Minister Nelson McCausland and by the chief executive of the Social Security Agency that either had issued a directive.

Ms Boyle said she found it “highly implausible” flag was erected without “orders from on high.”

Ms Boyle said: “Following local concerns expressed to me about this turn of events, I contacted the chief executive of the Social Security Agency who categorically stated that he had not ordered it.

“I then submitted a series of questions to DSD Minister Nelson McCausland including asking whether he had issued the order to which he responded ‘I have not issued a Ministerial direction that the Union flag be flown on designated days on all DSD buildings’.”

Ms Boyle added:  “So the question still remains as to who exactly issued the directive for this to happen in Strabane after a gap of 14 years and what was the motivation for doing so and I am now pursuing these questions with a direct Freedom of Information request to the Minister.”
