SDLP SET TO RATIFY CANDIDATES FOR NEXT YEAR’S LOCAL ELECTIONS

The SDLP is to hold two selection conventions within the next week to ratify its candidates in Derry and Strabane for next year’s local government elections.sdlp

Strabane party members gather in Murphys on the Green in the town at 7.00pm this Sunday.

The SDLP has only one sitting councillor on Strabane District Council – Patsy Kelly who represents the Mourne ward. The other wards are Derg and Glenelly.

Sinn Fein has the largest representation on Strabane District Council with eight elected representatives and currently holds the top two positions of  chairperson and vice-chairperson. The DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) has four representatives, Independents two and UUP (Ulster Unionist Party) one each.

The party’s Derry candidates will be selected at a convention to be held in the Tower Hotel, Butcher Street on the city, beginning at 6.00pm on Thursday next, 12 March.

The SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party) is the largest on the 30-seat Derry District Council with 14 elected representatives with Waterside councillor Martin Reilly the current Mayor.

The SDLP’s current councillors on Derry City Council are:

Cityside (comprising Beechwood, Brandywell, Creggan Central, Creggan South, Westland): Jim Clifford, Ann Donnelly.

Northland (comprising Crevagh, Foyle Springs, Pennyburn, Rosemount, Springtown, Strand and The Diamond): John Boyle, Sean, Carr, Eamon McAuley, Shauna Cusack (who was recently co-opted on to the council to replace John Tierney).

Rural (comprising Banagher, Claudy, Eglinton, Enagh, Hollymount, Newbuildings): Thomas Conway, Hugh Hastings, Brenda Stevenson.

Shantallow (comprising Ballynashallog, Carnhill, Culmore, Shantallow East, Shantallow West): Jimmy Carr, Shaun Gallagher, Angela Dobbins.

Waterside (comprising Altnagelvin, Caw, Clondermot, Ebrington, Kilfennan, Lisnagelvin and Victoria): Gerard Diver, Martin Reilly (current Mayor).
