A new initiative incorporating “Peace Pledges” by 70 schools in Derry and Donegal has been praised by Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan.peaceflame

Sixty schools and colleges from across the Derry City Council area and a further 10 schools in Donegal are involved in the “Pathways to Peace” which was unveiled today.

The brainchild of Rev. David Latimer, Minister of First Derry Presbyterian Church, the initiative emerged after the unveiling of Ireland’s first peace flame by Martin Luther King III in May this year.

Speaking after attending today’s unveiling of the project, Mr Durkan said the initiative was a “tremendous statement of hope and purpose.”

He added: “I’m very impressed by the work that has been put into the pledges by the children and young people involved.

“The words show that they have a very open and positive outlook – with a real respect for the views of others and a strong regard for the needs of others.

“I congratulate all of the partners involved in this very worthwhile project – particularly on the realisation of such a great idea.”

Mr Durkan concluded: “I also want to congratulate all of the children and young people and their teachers who have supported this initiative, which will now form a landmark project in the city.”
