Eight people are being questioned by police in Derry after a major drugs operation in the city.

Chief Inapector Jon Burrows.

Around 70 officers carried out 19 searches at addresses throughout the city yesterday, including in the Galliagh, Creggan and Strathfoyle areas.

Police said the operation, code-named “Denbreaker,”
was neighbourhood led operation and was supported by Crime Team and Tactical Support officers.

PSNI Area Commander Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said: “There is a lot of work taking place in partnership with the community to tackle the issue of drugs at all levels. Much of our work is in response to information from local people who are sick and tired of seeing drugs readily available in their neighbourhoods and watching criminals benefit from the misery of others.

“While this was a significant operation, we are keen to highlight that the smallest piece of information from the public can assist in the ongoing fight against drugs.

“There are a number of ways you can assist us in making your street a safer place to live; talk to your local neighbourhood officer or contact a community representative.

“If you don’t want to give your name then don’t feel you can’t help – the ‘Crimestoppers’ charity makes it easy for you to pass on whatever information you have without giving a name or any contact details.

“Local police will continue to seize drugs, put dealers in prison, and keep our streets, families, and friends safe but we rely on your help.”

He said police could be contacted on 0845 600 8000 and information about drug crime could also be passed on anonymously through the “Crimestoppers” charity on freephone 0800 555 111.
