A talented group of young musicians are hoping to change perceptions of classical music through a special showcase of new work taking place in Derry tonight.

The free performance of Hear Me will take place in Christchurch at 7.30pm.

Hear Me provides a platform for some of the city’s finest young talents to offer a new take on classical, and open it up to a whole new audience.

Kristine Donnan is the inspiration behind the concert which involves almost 20 classically trained musicians, all with links to the University of Ulster.

She said: “I applied for a culture grant last year in the hope that we could stage an event which would highlight classical music in a positive and modern way.

“I personally feel that classical music is often adapted now in the wrong way, and I think it can either be too esoteric or too post modern, which often puts people off.

“We decided to come together to give our take on it and to make it more accessible to everyone. I’m one of three composers who have written some original pieces  in the field of contemporary classical music, and we hope we can show that it can actually  be cool to like classical.

“We try not to be pretentious, but show our youth and vibrancy through the music and open it up to younger audiences.”

And the collection of work features some very uniquely modern pieces, Kristine revealed.

“Our styles are very different, Colin and Sean the other two composers are very pragmatic in their approach. My work includes some new dance tunes which should definitely appeal to younger people.

Kirstine concluded: “I think the concert will appeal to anyone who enjoys music and we would love everyone to come along to support  the event.”
