During his two-day stay, Mr Lewis will meet with a number of groups including the local Chamber of Commerce, the Apprentice Boys of Derry and the Inner City Trust as well as the city’s Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly.

He will also visit the Seagate factory, the Turner exhibition,  Museum of Free Derry and the Apprentice Boys of Derry Museum.

Mr Lewis will also attend the Advent Service and Dedication of Lighting Service St. Columb’s Cathedral and tour the City Walls with local guide Martin McCrossan.

Mr Lewis’s visit to the city has been welcomed by SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan who said since his appointment the Shadow Secretary of State had made a point of “being on the ground” in the North and was committed to keeping as well-informed as possible.

Mr Durkan added: “He has recently attended a number of party conferences and this is a great opportunity to get out beyond the parties to people and places.

The SDLP MP said he was delighted Mr Lewis would be visiting Derry while it was still the City of Culture.

He added: “Ivan has not only expressed an interest in seeing the Turner exhibition and experiencing some of Derry’s cultural offerings, but is also keen to speak to business leaders and visit tourism-related projects, including Seagate, the Chamber of Commerce,  independent retailers and the Museum of Free Derry.

“He also recently met the North West Community Network in Westminster and is committed to meeting a number of community groups in the city on a future visit.”

Mr Durkan concluded: “This is a great opportunity for Ivan to catch a glimpse of Derry and pick up on the issues and ideas that people have.”
