Matthew Wolfenden – better known as Emmerdale’s David Metcalfe – with fan Cathy Browne.

Not only did he help Santa light the town up but he took time out to sign autographs and get photographed with his adoring fans.

The event proved a huge success for organisers, Strabane District Council, who have been congratulated on providing the town’s best ever festive illuminations.

The Town Council had secured “match funding” from Department of Social Development (DSD) to make Strabane’s lights bigger, brighter and better than ever before.

“The Brambles.” starring Terri O’Reilly from The Voice of Ireland and Conor Scott from The Voice UK, provided the entertainment which also included stilt walkers, balloon modellers, face painters and the traditional mummers thrilling the crowds on streets in and around the town centre.

The  entertainment also included local community involvement with the town’s brass band Strabane Concert Brass and Class Act Drama Academy adding to the afternoon’s fun.

They were joined by the Sing Out Loud Riverine Choir and Percussion Group.

However, the highlight of the day was the arrival Santa Claus to joined the TV star for the big switch on.
