Police in Derry are currently rolling out an anti-burglary campaign in the city and are warning the public against complacency.

Burglary Campaign - Nov 13 a

Cllr Paul Fleming and Chief Inspector John Burrows launch the anti-burglary campaign.

The PSNI, in partnership with Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership (DPCSP) are urging residents to take a number of simple steps to protect their homes and property over the winter months.

Although domestic burglaries in the Derry City Council area have reduced substantially when compared to last year. police are warning against complacency and are currently rolling out an anti-burglary campaign in the area.

Speaking on the campaign and offering advice on home security, Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said the campaign was using bus shelters and information flyers to raise awareness among the community of simple steps that homeowners could take to secure their property.

He added: “Most burglaries in Foyle are opportunistic walk-ins so we are simply reminding householders to close their doors and windows, lock their property and check their home is secure.”

CI Burrows concluded: “A few minutes checking doors and windows can save people from the heartache of dealing with the aftermath of a break-in or burglary.”

Sinn Fein Cllr Paul Fleming, chairperson of Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership said the DPCSP was “fully supportive” of any initiatives that raised public awareness of the need to keep their homes safe.

He added: “As we are now into the darker nights, I would encourage residents to secure their homes by closing and locking all doors, windows and gates even if they are just nipping out for a few minutes.

“From experience we know that a lot of residential burglaries are opportunistic with criminals taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows.”

Cllr Fleming concluded: “Many of these crimes are easily avoidable and it is now an opportune time to remind residents to take a few simple steps every day to keep their homes secure from criminals.”

Flyers advising residents of the top ten burglary prevention tips are available from the PSNI, PCSP or the Community Safety Wardens.
