Templemore Sports Complex needs to be transformed into an “exceptional” tourist/leisure attraction, according to a local councillor.

Shantallow Sinn Féin Cllr Elisha McCallion has called on all those to be consulted  about the development of the facility to ensure that their voice was heard .

Cllr McCallion said: “The centre is set to receive an upgrade and  as a city we must aim high and demand a top of the range tourist/ leisure attraction at the Templemore site.

“There is an opportunity to achieve something exceptional here and it requires a combined effort from all involved.

“There will be a consultation with stakeholders and the public coming up and I would hope that everyone will be together in demanding that Templemore Sports Complex gets more than just a facelift or basic new build. It should be much, much more.”

Cllr McCallion concluded: “I and my party have worked tirelessly for this. It is a key strategic objective to deliver on for the people of the city. Now there is a real chance that Templemore could become one of the best leisure and sports facilities in Ireland.”

The plan should be to transform Templemore Sports Complex into a regional facility. This means that those from Donegal, Strabane and further afield would look to travel to it, as my wish is to see it as a major tourist attraction. The aim is to attract as many people as possible by ensuring the facilities there are state of the art.

Derry City Council has already pledged £17million for the development and now what is needed is a huge push from all those with an interest, whether it be specified stakeholders or the wider public to demand the best.
