Calling for support for the rally taking place in Guildhall Square at 1.00pm, SDLP Cllr John Boyle blasted the Minister for taken the advice of civil servants.

He said: “The Minister has made a decision to close it based on civil servants’ advice but ignoring all the public and professional advice to the contrary.”

The children who are and have attended the Unit need your support. Together we must stand up for the retention of this excellent educational facility.

There has been outage in a number of quarters since Education Minister John O’Dowd announced last month that the specialised unit was to close as a result of an amalgamation with Foyleview School in a project costing in the region of £7.5 million.

Mr O’Dowd said the amalgamation was to go ahead despite opposition from parents and politicians.
