Emergency services at the scene of the suspected gas leak on Chapel Road.

Around 20 homes were evacuated during the alert which began at around 12.30pm on Chapel Road. The area had been closed off and traffic diversions had been put in place.

Fire crews from Crescent Link fire station attended the incident.

One man told the Derry Daily he saw a “bubble in the tarmac in the road with smoke coming out of it.”

One woman who was asked to leave her home said: “They just told us to leave. We don’t know anything. They told us nothing.”

However, Derry Daily has learned the alert was caused by an underground electrical cable overheating and sending out smoke. As the cable was close to a gas link emergency services were called to the scene.

Those evacuated were allowed to return to their homes at 2.15pm.
