Damning reports into the North’s prisons will continue unless recommendations contained in a report by the Prison Review Team are fully implemented, a Derry MLA has said.

Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney.

The scathing report by the Prison Review Team, led by Dame Anne Owers, recommends a number of changes and makes a compelling case that the prison service has to change and cannot continue in its current form.

Sinn Fein MLA Raymond McCartney, vice-chairperson of the Justice Committee,

The Foyle MLA and Vice-Chair of the Justice Committee was speaking after the most recent damning report into two of the North’s prisons by the Criminal Justice Inspection.

Mr McCartney said: “We note with concern another damning report into the management of the women’s prison and young offenders centre at Hydebank Wood.”

He added the reports and findings came despite the promise of reform following the review of prisons here by Anne Owers.

He said: “The Prison Service need to return to Anne Owers recommendations or we will continue to have damning reports on the state of the prisons in the future.”
