The people of Derry have been invited to have their say in the City’s Christmas celebrations from next year on.

Sinn Fein Cllr Elisha McCallion.

Cllr Elisha McCallion, chairperson of the Development Committee on Derry City Council  has called on Ilex, other statutory bodies and members of the general public to put forward proposals to Derry City Council for any additional events they would like to see in the city for Christmas 2014/15.

The Sinn Fein representative while there had been “popular demand for an ice rink to return to city over the festive period, it may have come “too late” this year as Derry City Council’s Christmas preparations were at an “advanced stage.”

However, she said  people should get in contact with the Council and Ilex to suggest what they would like to see in Derry during Christmas time.

Cllr McCallion said: “It is unfortunate the call for an ice ink has come at this late stage. Derry City Council will take this on board and be sure to raise it for Christmas preparations 2014.’

However, she said people should contact the relevant public bodies in order to notify them of what they would like to see in the city for Christmas.

Cllr McCallion added:”It is all about what the ratepayers want in and around the city at Christmas time and we hope to be direct in our engagement.”

She said it was hoped  events such as the turning on of the lights and the possibility of an ice rink would attract more and more visitors to Derry.

Cllr McCallion added: “We have already enhanced the likes of the Christmas switch on and as chairperson of Development Committee, I, along with Derry City Council, am committed to making Christmas in the city as memorable as possible.”
