DERRY City and Strabane District Council have taken the decision to temporarily close its Winterland Market in Guildhall Square.
Later on Saturday council will decide whether or not to reopen the market and to ahead with a Christmas procession planned for 6pm.
Apologising for any inconvenience caused, a Council spokesperson said that the decision was made in the interests of the health and safety of the public.
“As a result of the exceptionally high winds Council has temporarily closed the Winterland Market in Guildhall Square this afternoon, Saturday.
“We will review & provide an update later this afternoon.”
Meanwhile, PSNI Foyle have warned drivers to take extra care on the roads due to the weather conditions.
“Drivers please take care when out on the roads today.
“Strong winds and surface water are making driving conditions hazardous.
“Make sure your lights are working, slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front,” a PSNI spokesperson said.
