Welcoming the decision by Hendersons Group to install defibrillators at their stores in Derry, Cllr Angela Dobbins says she is excited at the thought that finally something is being done to address the issue of increase cardiac fatalities.
The SDLP Cllr said: “I have put this motion twice through full council – within Derry City Council and the new Derry & Strabane District council urging that defibrillators be not only installed in every council facility and premises but also to have them installed at strategic points throughout the city.
“I am delighted that the Hendersons Group, who franchise Vivo, Spar and Eurospar have taken the initiative to have these vital pieces of equipment installed at their stores not only in Derry but throughout Northern Ireland.
“This campaign complements a strategy launched by DHSSPS in 2014. The Community Resuscitation Strategy aims at improving the survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and with the increase in availability of defibrillators throughout the province I am certain that more lives will be saved in the future.”
Cllr Dobbins also states: “I hope that more Supermarket and Department Stores will follow Hendersons example and provide funding to install these vital AEDs at their premises therefore making out of hospital cardiac fatalities a statistic of the past.”
