MARTIN McGuinness has proposed a referendum for the public to decide on the thorny issue of same-sex marriage in the North.
The Deputy First Minister was speaking on the UTV’s hour long election debate programme on Tuesday night.
It was the first time that it was broadcast right across England, Wales and Scotland.
For the first time, parties in the North will be needed to help form a government after the elections.
Mr McGuinness got qualified support for his idea from Foyle Westminister candidate Mark Durkan and Naomi Long of the Alliance Party.
Danny Kennedy of the UUP said he would have to think about it while Nigel Dodds of the DUP said that it should be handled within the Assembly.
On Monday, a motion on same sex marriage was defeated for the fourth time on Monday.
The DUP blocked it by the use of petitions of concern.
A referendum will be held next month in the Republic on the issue of same sex marriages.
