Derg Sinn Féin Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, the “presiding councillor” (chairperson) of the Derry-Strabane “Super Council,” will this week lead a delegation of Clady community representatives to Hillsborough Castle to lobby the DRD committee on the increasing number of articulated lorries travelling through the small village of Clady.
The meeting is being held to deal specifically with small towns across the North which have similar problems.
Clady has been selected as it has been raised in the assembly several times this year by local MLA Michaela Boyle.
Speaking ahead of the meeting Cllr McHugh said he was “delighted” to be given the opportunity to bring the Clady traffic issue before the committee.
He added: “In recent times many residents have contacted me with concerns relating to the number of articulated lorries travelling through the village each day.
“Clady is a small village with a narrow street leading through it.
“The residents in the area are worried about the amount of these lorries which are pounding through the village causing damage to roads, traffic jams and also raising safety concerns for people living close to the road side.”
Cllr McHugh concluded: “This meeting will give us a great opportunity to put Clady on the agenda in the hope of coming up with measures to resolve this issue for the people living in the area.”
