
Victim Charles Dooher was left fighting for his life in hospital after vicious assault
The 60-year-old man was arrested in the Derry Friday afternoon, Friday, July 11, on suspicion of the attempted murder of a man aged in his 20s on Monday, January 20.
Following questioning, the PSNI say: “A 60-year-old man, arrested in the Derry area on Friday 11th July on suspicion of attempted murder, has been bailed to allow for further enquiries.”
The arrest comes after a woman in her 50s was arrested in connection with the brutal assault in Donegal this week.
Charles Dooher, 26, suffered life-changing injuries when he was set upon by five masked men at his home on the Conneyburrow Road in Lifford on January 20th last.
Gardai this week arrested a woman in connection with the incident.
The suspect was questioned by detectives for a number of days at a Garda station in West Donegal before being released without charge.
A file on the arrest is to be compiled and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office confirmed: “Gardaí arrested a woman in connection with the investigation into an attempted murder in Lifford, Co. Donegal, on 20th January, 2025.
“The woman, aged in her 50s, was arrested on Sunday, 6th July, 2025 and detained at a Garda Station in the North West under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.
“She has since been released and a file will be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.”
The victim and his father, Charles Snr, were repeatedly beaten by a gang at their home at 10am on January 20th last.
Charles Dooher senior, who is in his 60s, received treatment for less serious injuries at Letterkenny University Hospital.
However, Charles Dooher Jnr was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and he was treated in intensive care for several weeks.
The young farmer had a number of operations and a protective plate fitted to his head.
His family, as well as his Derry girlfriend Charlotte Gallen, kept a bedside vigil for Charles Jnr praying for him to recover.
Their prayers were answered and Charles managed to survive and recently visited his beloved local GAA club, Naomh Padraig Leifear, to watch his teammates play.
Gardaí continue to appeal to the public for any information or witnesses related to this incident.

They are particularly anxious to speak to any persons who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) of a silver/grey Peugeot 3008 (2009-2013 model) in the Coneyburrow Road area of Lifford between 10am and 11am on January 20, to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
