The Alley Theatre is delighted to announce the remarkable success of the 8th International Flann O’Brien Conference, which took place 24th – 27th June, drawing scholars, artists, and delegates from around the globe to celebrate the life and work of one of Ireland’s most enigmatic literary figures – Flann O’Brien.
This prestigious event, held in collaboration with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Tourism NI, Strabane History Society, and Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame, USA marked a significant cultural milestone for the town.
The conference brought together an inspiring array of speakers, exhibitions, and performances, shining a global spotlight on Strabane as a centre for literary and artistic excellence.
Over the course of four dynamic days, delegates took part in panel discussions featuring keynote speakers, attended book launches, film screenings, and exhibition openings.
One of the many highlights included a walking tour led by Alley Theatre staff, guiding guests around Flann O’Brien’s birthplace and key local attractions linked to his life and legacy.
The Alley Theatre extends their deepest thanks and appreciation to The International Flann O’Brien Society, led by chair and Professor Maebh Long, University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, New Zealand, Strabane History Society for their instrumental role in supporting the event’s success, and to Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame, in particular: Brian Ó Conchubhair, PhD, Professor & Interim Chair, Dept of Irish Language and Literature.
Council says it is immensely proud of the local businesses that extended an exceptional level of hospitality to delegates.
Recognition goes to The Farmers Home, Oysters Restaurant, ASPACE2 Coffee Shop, Mks B and B, The Banks restaurant, Joe’s Bar, all the local performers at the fringe events and all the hospitality businesses across Strabane who welcomed visitors with warmth and professionalism, making their stay truly memorable.

“Both exhibitions are on show at the Alley Theatre until 30th September.
