Durkan: Minister ignoring consequences of NI Water underfunding

SDLP Opposition Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has said the Minister is refusing to face up to the consequences of chronic underinvestment in NI Water.

He was speaking following an Assembly update from Liz Kimmins on Tuesday regarding an investigation into NI Water’s overspend.

Foyle MLA Mr Durkan said: “Every government body must live within its means and that includes NI Water. While we accept resources are limited, the Infrastructure Minister continues to ignore the scale of the crisis and the consequences for people across the North.

“The current budget is clearly not enough to tackle our outdated wastewater infrastructure.

“Vital housing developments are being delayed and sewage is entering our waterways, with devastating impacts on our environment and public health.

“We can already see, feel and smell the impact of underinvestment in NI Water all around us.

“Unless the Minister delivers the funding required, these problems will only get worse.”
