Condemnation after second night of rioting in Derry

Politicians have condemned a second night of violence in Derry.

Police came under attack by masked youths.

A number of missiles, including masonry and petrol bombs, were thrown towards officers in the Nailors Row area of the city on Tuesday evening.

On Monday night fireworks and masonry were thrown at officers in the same area of the city, injuring three officers.

Foyle MLAs Mark H Durkan and Gary Middleton described the scenes as incredibly disappointing.

In a post on social media, the SDLP’s Mark H Durkan appealed to parents “to ensure your children aren’t caught up in this”.

“We have sadly seen in the not too distant past how these situations can escalate with fatal consequences.

“Teenagers can end up with a criminal record that will affect their future chances of employment and travel.”

The DUP’s Gary Middleton condemned “another night of violence close to the Fountain estate and an elderly resident’s home”.

“These acts of violence serve no purpose other than causing harm to our communities,” he said.

On Monday, two officers were struck by masonry, while a third was hit by a firework.

Two teenage boys aged 13 and 18 were arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour and were later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police confirmed that the disorder on Monday was not racially motivated.
