Irish people will be in Egypt today to join supporters from over 60 countries with the goal of marching to the Rafah crossing in Gaza.
A Derry representative is one of around 50 people from Ireland who are taking part in The Global March to Gaza.
It describes itself as a peaceful movement, aiming to lift the siege of the Palestinian enclave.
Participants had been gathering throughout the week in the Egyptian capital Cairo, before travelling by bus to Al Arish, where the 48km march and are expected to arrive at Rafah today.
The Derry rep is the only person from the North West of Ireland taking part in the march, according to Inishowen IPSC.
Derry ISPC said its rep is from Glack which is a hamlet outside of Ballykelly in Co Derry.
The Derry ISPC branch said: “We’re proud to endorse and support the March to Gaza, a powerful act of international solidarity that shines a light on the ongoing genocide in Palestine and the urgent need for justice and peace.
“From Derry, we send strength to everyone taking part—especially to our friend and fellow campaigner Janine, who has been a valued part of our solidarity efforts here at home.
“We admire her courage in joining this important journey and wish her and all walkers every success and safety on the road ahead.
The March to Gaza is a reminder that people across the world are watching, speaking out, and stepping forward when governments remain complicit.
“It’s a collective cry for freedom, justice, and an end to the slaughter of civilians, especially children, in Gaza.
“Derry IPSC stands firmly behind this initiative. Our hearts and voices march alongside those putting their bodies on the line to demand action.”
Inishowen IPSC branch say it completely agrees with Derry IPSC.
“About 50 from Ireland in total are part of it, including TD Paul Murphy Solidarity/PBP, who is updating regularly on his social media.
“I have heard he got released after having been detained and his passport taken by the Egyptian authorities. Utterly shameful!”
Mr Murphy was released on Saturday and called on Tánaiste Simon Harris to put pressure on the Egyptian government to allow the ‘Global March to Gaza’ to reach Gaza.
Mr Murphy was among a number of Irish people who were detained by Egyptian authorities while travelling through the country to reach Rafah on the peace march.
