SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin
Ms McLaughlin said: “Seeking justice is often a deeply traumatic and re-traumatising process, especially for women and survivors of intimate partner violence.
“Too often, victims are forced to relive their most painful experiences without the care, sensitivity, and support they deserve.
“This new draft strategy is a step in the right direction, but we must go further to ensure victims are not failed by the very system meant to protect them.
“Our justice system is under huge strain and too many victims are being left to navigate a complex, confusing and sometimes cold system without the tailored, trauma-informed support they need. That’s not acceptable.
“Restoring confidence in justice means listening to victims, respecting their rights, and supporting them every step of the way from the first report of a crime to the final outcome. That includes clear communication, timely updates, and access to services that are sensitive to age, gender, and vulnerability.
“The SDLP has consistently called for a comprehensive, long-term approach to supporting victims and witnesses. I welcome this strategy as an important foundation, but delivery will be critical.
“I will be holding the Minister to account to ensure that this is not just a document of good intentions, but one that transforms lived experience for victims in the system.
“If we are serious about restoring public trust, we must show victims that the justice system is on their side.
“I strongly encourage victims, advocacy organisations, and members of the public to engage with this consultation.
“Any reform must be shaped by the voices of those who have experienced the system at its best and at its worst.”
