City of Derry Airport facing funding crisis

SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood has welcomed a commitment from Stormont to cover the running costs for City of Derry Airport.

The SDLP has repeatedly highlighted the funding model as the best way forward for the airport.

Said the Foyle MP: “The City of Derry Airport is a vital piece of transport infrastructure that connects people, communities and businesses across these islands.

“It’s a key part of our ambition to grow Derry’s economy by bringing new business and opportunities to the North West.

“The Department for the Economy’s decision to take over the operational funding of the airport is the right one and something we’ve been urging the Executive to do for some time, particularly my colleague Councillor John Boyle.

“Addressing the significant regional economic imbalances must be a priority and that means investing in transport infrastructure – active travel, roads, rail, sea and airports.

SDLP councillor John Boyle said: “It has taken many years of hard work to get this funding over the line.

“In government SDLP Ministers were the first to seriously engage with this proposal and we have continued to drive it forward across Westminster, Stormont and the council.

“I’m hopeful this will secure the future of City of Derry Airport, while freeing up council resources to invest in facilities and projects right across our area.”
